Equipment hire in Marbella

Marbella is not a heavy-industry town and the hire fleet reflects that. The bread-and-butter work here is villa refurbishment — pool areas, terraces, retaining walls, render and paint, air conditioning, solar panels, garden re-landscaping — spread across thousands of individual properties rather than concentrated on a handful of large sites. If you own or manage a property between Estepona and Fuengirola, the machine you need is almost always a small one that has to squeeze through a gate.

The categories that move fastest on this stretch of coast:

• Mini diggers of 1.5–2 t (€100–180/day excluding VAT) for pool excavation, drainage runs, terrace groundwork and taking out old planting. The 2.5–3.5 t class (€150–280/day) appears when there is real spoil to move.
• Cherry pickers and scissor lifts — an electric scissor of 8–10 m at €45–90/day for interior and flat-ground work, an articulated boom of 12–16 m at €90–230/day when there is a pool, a hedge or a parked car between you and the wall.
• Facade scaffolding at €6–12 per m² per month, which is how render, repainting and roof-edge work is priced here — by the month, not by the week.
• Generators at €28–55/day for the 3–5 kVA class, mostly for finca-style properties inland from the coast road and for jobs where the supply has been cut during works.
• Dumpers (€70–140/day) and plate compactors (€35–70/day), which are near-universal on the sloping plots this coast is built on.

Slopes and gates decide the machine, not the job

Marbella's urbanisations climb, and a plot that looks flat in a listing photo often has a steep approach, a hairpin at the gate and a narrow side passage to the rear garden. Gate width is therefore the single most useful measurement you can give a hire desk: a 1.5 t mini digger typically passes through around a metre, a 3 t machine will not. It also explains why a tracked spider lift, which folds to under a metre and stabilises on four legs, is often the right access machine here even at €145–260/day.

Winter is the season, not summer

Owners who only visit in July assume the coast works to a British calendar. It does not. Serious refurbishment on the Costa del Sol happens between October and April, when the property is empty and rental income is not being lost. That is when fleets are tightest and booking two or three weeks ahead genuinely changes the price. August is the opposite problem: machines are free but much of the industry is away, and quotes come back slowly or not at all.

Spanish hire companies work in a radius from their yard, not by municipality. A depot in Málaga capital or in the Guadalhorce valley will serve Marbella happily, but the transport line on the quote grows with every kilometre. Expect €100–250 per journey, and remember there are two journeys: delivery and collection. On a one-day hire of a small machine, transport can easily exceed the hire itself, which is the single most common surprise on a first Spanish invoice.

Which towns get served from the same yards

The suppliers who deliver into Marbella also cover San Pedro de Alcántara, Nueva Andalucía, Puerto Banús, Estepona, Benahavís, Ojén, Mijas, La Cala, Fuengirola and Benalmádena. Further west towards Sotogrande and further east past Torremolinos you hit different depots and different transport pricing, so if your property sits at either edge, say so: it is usually cheaper to be served by the nearer yard even if it is in another municipality.

English is available, but it is not the default

Some hire firms on this coast deal with foreign owners daily and answer in fluent English; many do not, and their WhatsApp replies come in Spanish. Neither says anything about quality, but specifications do get lost — you ask for a cherry picker and a scissor lift arrives, or you agree a price and discover it was per week. We take the brief in English, translate it into the terms a Spanish hire desk expects (plataforma articulada, miniexcavadora, andamio de fachada) and send it out, so what comes back is priced against the job you actually described.

Community and urbanisation rules

Most Marbella properties sit inside a comunidad de propietarios with its own rules on working hours, use of common areas and access for heavy vehicles. Before a lorry turns up with a machine on the back, check with the administrator whether a delivery slot needs booking and whether there are restricted hours — typically no noisy work during the long lunch period, and often nothing at all on Sundays. Scaffolding that oversails a common area or blocks a shared path will need the community's permission in writing, and that takes days rather than hours.

What to tell us

Four things get you an accurate price rather than a vague range: what you are trying to do (not which machine you think you need), the full address or postcode, the dates, and the access — gate width, slope, steps, and whether a lorry can stop outside. If you are not sure which machine the job calls for, say so. Guessing wrong is how people end up paying for a 25-metre boom when 12 metres would have done.

What the quote will and will not include

Spanish quotes are issued as a presupuesto — a written offer, not an instant online booking. Read three lines carefully. IVA: prices are quoted excluding VAT and 21% is added at invoice. Transporte: delivery and collection are almost always separate. Fianza: a deposit is held, typically €300–800 for a small access platform and €400–1,000 for a mini digger, and released after the machine is inspected back at the yard rather than at the moment it is collected from you.

Operators and training

If nobody on site holds Spanish-recognised training for the machine, hire it with an operator. This matters most for access platforms, where Spanish law requires documented, machine-specific training and a UK IPAF card is not automatically accepted.
